Surf Contest

Move Over Boys
All-Wahine Amateur Surf Contest

Surfing! Prizes! Fun! Community! Fame!

2008 tentative contest event dates: August 16 and 17

Mark these dates and look forward to one of Oahu's highlight events.

We would like to open additional divisions to give more opportunity as well as a level playing field.

Divisions will be:

1. Novice (1st contest ever participants)

2. Amateur (Regularly competing girls)

3. Pro / Sponsored

Participants will be grouped into age categories. Participants will be allowed to select one level of competition per category (Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard). The novice division is thanks to Susan Nishida's brainstorm. If there are not enough entries for your division, we may combine divisions.

Volunteers

We are looking to fill 3 volunteer chair positions for next year's event. Volunteer chairs will work with us approximately 2 hours every week to coordinate promotions, staffing, and operations of the event.

Feedback

Two improvements to the 2007 contest included moving the date into the summertime (to have a better chance at getting nice waves - it worked!) and posting a tentative schedule before the contest online (so contestants know better what to expect - it worked!). Please send feedback and suggestions to Contest@GirlsWhoSurf.com. The tiering of heats into the grand prizes this year was thanks in part to Caitlin Owen.

The Friends of Kewalos have made a movement to minimize contests at Kewalo Basin Park so that the non-contest local surfers can enjoy the surf on summer weekends. As a result community meetings were held and it was decided that one meeting will be held next year at which time, 8 contest permits may be approved, and only 5 for the Point. While we believe the State bases permit approvals based on when they receive the application and for how many of the public it serves, we would never want to be denied a permit due to lack of strength of voice. Please consider sending a letter (or email) to us or directly to the State about your experience with our event. It will help us to have a stronger voice in requesting the beach and water permits. Our contest yearly serves about 200 contestants, spectators, volunteers, and sponsors. We hope to always be granted the necessary permits to continue our contests.
