Sol Sirens
~2006
The first true documentary on women's surfing, capturing the lives of a
diverse group of real surfer girls. Well spoken, elegant and graceful, this
is the voice of surfer girl lifestyle, told by the surfers themselves as
they travel from California to Hawaii, the Mentawais, Rarotonga, Indonesia,
Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. After watching, you¡¦ll want to
drop everything and travel the world to chase after these magical mermaids.

Review by Lymari
Very well
done. Ashley Carney is a surfer and aspiring filmmaker. She went on a surf
trip around the world with her friends. Granted, her friends include some of
the best surfers in the world like, Christina Zeitler, Daize Shayne,
Guinnevere Allen, Koral McCarthy, Alayna Schiebel, Katie Vogel and Kassia
Meador. The tone of this film is very different. It¡¦s not about promoting a
brand, competing or sexy underwater footage. This is about Ashley¡¦s surfing
journey. It¡¦s a highly relatable soul searching adventure. She talks about
learning how to surf and how it changes your life forever. Why do you surf?
What about the mixing of you and nature is it that drives you to paddle out
again and again after being held under, thrown on the rocks, dragged by your
leash and smacked down onto the reef? There¡¦s a gruesome segment about
surfing injuries. It happens. True surfers brandish their battlescars like
trophies. Surfer attitude perspective helps to see the joy and appreciation
of life so often missed under the cloud of corporate conglomerations
prompting you to consume. The segment on the Mentawai islands is a heartfelt
and true collision of first world desires and third world needs.
